This is a letter opener that I made as a gift for my uncle in England. He collects "paper knives" as he calls them. It is ground from 1/8" thick brass. The handle material is domestic sheep horn. It was a gift from a neighbor.
Dan's hand-crafted, solid brass, sheep-horn-handled steak-knife-look paper knife (letter opener) holds a particularly meaningful place in my collection, and I'll use it for personal letters only; no junk mail. But it is somewhat tempting to try it out on a roast leg-of-lamb dinner.
I also own two other knives made by Dan: a very useful paring knife and an early one, made from a railroad spike.
